I am sad to report that this is the end of Ace's blog. We received word this week that he was humanely euthanised over the weekend. For the past few weeks he had not been acting right. That morning he did not come up to be fed with the other horses, and his owner's husband found him down in the pasture and unable to get to his feet. The decision was made to have him destroyed there.
In my opinion this is for the best. A buyer had been found who was looking for a young horse as a project, but I am happy he did not have to go to yet another new place with his issues. Now I won't have to track him and worry about him for the next 20 some years.
The new filly "Sonia" is doing very well. Perhaps she will make an appearance now and then on The Grey Horse blog.

It's never an easy choice but it's often the right one and one we've had to make with our own horses, young and old from time to time.
Please know you're in our thoughts tonight.
So sorry that Ace's life didn't go quite the way one hopes, but agree that he had the best life he could and you and mom and his new owners did the best by him.
And as you point out, it is at least a relief to know what happened to him through his life and not whether he is somewhere mistreated, neglected, or miserable somewhere, or has inflicted harm on someone.

Leslie summed up my thoughts well. As sad as it is this cloud does have a silver lining of sorts. He was quite the cutie and left his mark on the world even if his time here was way too short.
Thank you all for your thoughts. I still remember well the day I knew Ace was not going to have a good life. Deep down I knew it was worse than gelding would solve. He was only a few wekks old when we knew we had out hands full. Getting the news yesterday was really a relief and oddly has not come with any residual sadness.
Thankfully, this one is a filly, and shows none of the early signs of being either a fruitcake or a devil child. In fact, she has been a lovely and enjoyable foal and her mother loves her.
Brita I am so sorry to hear about Ace. I wonder what it was the wasn't right in him as he had probably a better up-bringing than most youngsters out there. I'm sad for your loss, but looking forward to seeing more of your new filly.
